donut days

It's the simple things in life that make it so enjoyable. They can add a little bounce in your step and a smile on your face. It's the simple things that keep you going throughout the day when you would otherwise want to just give up. Donut days are one of those things for me.

Every Thursday at my house is "Donut Day." It's been that way since I was in pre-school and has continued every week without fail. It all began because of my mom's office. Each Thursday in her office, a person is assigned to bring in donuts. You put your name in the rotation and you're allowed a donut each week. No name, no donut. When I was little, my mom would take my brother and I to pre-school and she would pick up the donuts on her way. Once we started getting donuts, we couldn't stop. Even after we moved on to kindergarten and elementary school, we still had donuts every Thursday. Thursdays without donuts just seemed wrong.

Somewhere along the line, we switched over from Dunkin Donuts to Krispy Kreme. Not because we didn't love Dunkin, but just because it was more convenient. About the same time, the donut duty switched from my mom to my dad. I don't really know why, but my dad now takes this role EXTREMELY serious. Every Wednesday night, he takes orders on what kind of donuts everyone would like. He buys a dozen for $7.13. This means that we each can have two donuts and then there's a couple left over. I, personally, go for the "Devil's Food" donuts. It's a chocolate donut with a glaze coat and very tasty. My mom, on the other hand, enjoys the "Hot Now" donuts, which are the orignal glazed donuts. When they come right out of the oven, they almost melt in your mouth. She usually ends up eating hers on Wednesday night when my dad brings them home. The order for my dad is usually two creme filled donuts, but that changes every so often.

Once I left for college, Thursdays became a little less exciting. Donut Days were gone and replaced with poptarts and cereal. Occasionally, I'll splurge and have a bagel. Donut Days have come back in my life this summer and I love it. They're just another thing I love about being home and add a little spring in my Thursday morning (or late Wednesday nights) steps.
