As part of this legacy, every team hosts a legacy project at their school. It's a physical service project for people of the community and the school to come out and help "leave a legacy at the school." A lot of the schools we serve at are old and need a lot of help. NHCS is different because it is only 6 years old. Finding a legacy project was kind of hard, but we ended up painting quotes with the school values on it, which turned out really awesome.
Monday night, the CMs and Erica stayed late to trace the quotes onto the canvases, along with silhouettes that Megan had found. Then on Wednesday, wet had each canvas out in the dining hall, as well as paint for each canvas. Our Course Coaching students came instead of going to Course Coaching, which was awesome. It was so fun to just be able to hang out with them and talk while painting. JR was really into it and it was really cool to see her so excited about something. She's so quiet and doesn't say much, so it was a great surprise to see her so enthusiastic about it. JA was not having it and had her mom pick her up before the painting even started, which is good because if she's in a bad mood or doesn't want to do something, it's better if she just leaves. She missed out though. Anyways, JR, MO and a couple of other middle schoolers and I painted one of my favorite quotes "It takes COURAGE to grow up and be who you really are." by e.e. cummings. It emphasizes the school value of courage and I think it is a quote with such truth, especially for middle schoolers.
Overall, the event went well. A lot of middle schoolers who weren't in Course Coaching came and helped paint for a little while and most of the students from Course Coaching were really into in. We had to go back and touch up/redo a few of the paintings because the middle schoolers were not the best paying attention to detail, but it was worth it. I think that this event was awesome for a couple of reasons. As I already said, it was great to see students like JR so into something like this. Second, it was awesome to get the students involved in something service related. They don't really grasp the whole idea of giving back and doing work for free (I think it's a middle school thing), so it was cool to see them so excited about service.
I hope that, when we leave in five weeks, we leave a legacy of hard work, love, devotion, and positive change. I've said it before, but for every thing I've taught my students, they've taught me about ten more. I'm so honored and proud to have served at NHCS and I hope they feel the same way about having me there.
