I returned to NHCS today and was so excited to see all of my little ones. As soon as they saw me, they told me how much they missed me, which was so comforting because I had truly missed them over the past four days. I was in the classroom with them until three just observing and helping out, which was nice after being in training/weekend for four days. I needed some time back in the first grade.
I feel like Ms. Moulton and I have got our system down. I've learned how she runs the classroom (like a tight ship) and her organization system. I definitely think it was the right teacher pairing for me. Today was a great day in first grade as well, with lots of crafts, coloring and stories. They read a book about horses which was always fun and the horse was the barn animal of the day. I found out that in two weeks, I get to go on a field trip with them, which is awesome! We're going apple picking, which is going to be super cute.
This morning, we had a sleeper. When I say a sleeper, I don't just mean a kid who was nodding off. This kid was ASLEEP sitting on the carpet. Poor TD* was so sleepy all morning I could tell it was a struggle for him at morning carpet time. He was nodding off and then finally just fell asleep. He was so sound asleep he didn't even notice when everyone else got up to go back to their desks. Then, once he moved to his desk, his head went down and out he went. Apparently this is a major problem and happened last year too. He told his teacher last year that he shares a room with his sisters and they watch TV until late into the night. The poor kid is probably only getting seven hours of sleep when he really needs closer to 10-11. I eventually took him out of the class to the nurse's office where there's a trampoline. The nurse has him jump on the trampoline for five minutes to wake him up and that seems to solve the problem. I am also writing down when it happens every day and a weekly report will be sent home to his parents. Hope they get the hint sooner rather than later.
Other than the sleeper, today was pretty uneventful. We had a few trips to the nurse thanks to an exciting half hour of recess. As Ms. Moulton said, "President Obama should have an ice pack because it seems to solve any type of problem." You give a first grader an ice pack and the problem is solved immediately. Oh and the best story of the day was from little CM, one of my favorites. All of the students had cut out pictures from magazines of things they liked and were going to glue them on a piece of paper that I had traced of their head. These "portraits" are going to be hung around the room at Open House next week for their parents to see. Today, they were gluing everything on and I was walking around to look at what they had cut out. I went over to see CM's project and ask him what his pictures were of. I pointed to this picture in the middle. He goes "my favorite food is hot dogs! I love hot dogs!" Cute, right? Oh wait, they weren't hot dogs, they were cigars that he thought were hot dogs. Of course, the glue had already dried so the damage had been done. Poor CM has cigars smack dab in the middle of his project. So wrong, but so cute.
After school let out, we practiced PT for an hour since TOMORROW IS EARN YOUR BOOTS! Ahhhhhhhhh!!! Tomorrow, we have to perform PT in front of the entire corps and staff. PT Crew will judge us on our moves and if they think we look good enough, we'll pass and earn our boots. Last year, only two out of the 14 teams earned it on the first try. We've been practicing so much and I really think we're good. Plus, it would give me sooooo much satisfaction to get them on the first try if Chelsea didn't. So mean of me, but when she literally talks about how much they've been practicing every day, I just can't help it. So think of me tomorrow around 8am. I'll be in Copley, hopefully earning my boots.
Education fact of the day:
"Almost 50% of children in low income communities will drop out of school."
*I'm just going to use their initials since I can't use their names
