birthdays and epidemics

I'm officially 23 and one day old. I don't feel twenty three at all. I feel like I should be like a senior in high school. Definitely not a "twenty something."

My birthday was great.  It was a lot more eventful than I expected, but it turned out to be wonderful in the end.  I went to the dining hall to see my first graders before school and Erica whispered to them that it was my birthday. Before I knew it, they were all singing to me.  It was cute. They had made me cards and pictures and couldn't stop asking how old I was.

The stomach flu was going around the school and when I say going around I mean spreading like the plague.  There were 14 of the 41 sixth graders present yesterday and one more got sick at basketball practice that afternoon. I had five students absent yesterday, which out of twenty is a lot.  Three corps members got sick and had to go home. I have never washed my hands so many times. At ten thirty, Erica looked up the definition of an epidemic and we had already qualified. The whole day was just ridiculous because teachers and students were dropping like flies.  At one point, one of my middle schoolers turned to me and says "Do you think they're going to cancel school because so many people are sick?" and I honestly thought the answer could have been yes.

We went to dinner after school at Puritan Pizza which is just this hole in the wall pizza and pasta place. It's got the best chicken broccoli alfredo I've ever had.  Since we had just gone out to a sit down dinner, I figured people wanted a more laid back place, and this is delicious, so it was perfect. They even had a cake for me and Rachel, who's birthday was Sunday.  The day ended video chatting with my family, which was nice. I didn't want to open their gifts without them, so this was a great way to do it. I got a Kindle, which I'm super pumped about!! I love it already. I'll take any book suggestions because now I can get them whenever I want wherever I want.

Today was just as bad at school with the flu, so much so the nurse ended up going home. We had 17 kids in the morning and by the afternoon only 13 were left.  Two went home because of sick siblings, but the other two got sick at school (luckily not while I was around).  The saddest was my buddy KC who was just laying  at his desk with his head down. Whenever I would go check on him he would just moan and say "I. Want. My. Mommyyyyy." I teared up it was so sad. When I called his mom to say he was complaining, she was like "Oh he never complains, it must be bad. I'm on my way." Before she could get there, he apparently got sick. Another one of my kids, KO was fine when we went to recess and by the time we were walking in, he was getting sick on the sidewalk.  It just comes out of nowhere and gets ya!!

Thank goodness we're at HQ tomorrow. We have our holiday party and the afternoon off for team time. I've never been so glad to leave that school. It is germ central and I am not loving it.

Thank you so much for all of the birthday wishes! I truly appreciate each and every one. I am so lucky to have all of you and my 23 years have been better for it.
