rewinding a few days

I realized that I never wrote about my one day at school last week  and it's a shame because it was an eventful day. I missed my kids so much and was so excited to see them, but I should have known it would be more than just a normal day.

The day started off pretty normal.  First circle was uneventful and it was nice to be back with everyone. I went to morning reading ready for some attitude from JA.  Erica had been reading with them all week and all the kids love her, so I was sure that they would be asking for her.  Also, JA hadn't been to Course Coaching the week before because she had been absent and left early, so I hadn't really spent a lot of time with her because I had been gone the three days after she came back to school. Anyways, that morning, I was joking with her saying stuff like "Are we ever going to be in Course Coaching together?" and "Are you going to come today?" expecting her to just kind of brush me off. Danielle had been with them in Course Coaching while I was gone and I wasn't sure how that was going.  So, anyways, I was joking with JA about coming to Course Coaching.  She turns to me and was like "I'm only coming if you're there because I don't like Ms. Joseph (Danielle)" in her sassy, matter-of-fact tone. I had to bite my tongue from laughing and agreeing.  Even though it was a compliment wrapped in an insult, I'll take it. I may not be her best friend, but I'm not her worst enemy.

On top of that, all of my morning reading kids got an 80 or 90 on their reading quiz which is awesome compared to the 30s and 40s we normally get.   I'm going to get them donut holes or something. I was a proud CM!

So, my morning reading group was my joy of the day.  My first graders were definitely a handful in the afternoon, especially my "Go With the Flow" kid, BD.  He and his best friend TC had some fun in bathroom at lunch that got them in  A LOT of trouble. They both went to the bathroom during lunch and were in there for a while, but I didn't really notice because lunch is hectic.  They came back as Ms. Moulton was coming to get them and she noticed that their hair was dripping wet.  She turns to BD and says, "Ummmmm why is your hair wet?" and with a straight face he says "Because I put my head under the sink and turned on the water" in the proudest voice he had.  Needless to say, they were both in trouble.  She asked TC why he was so wet and he said, "because I got my hands wet and rubbed my hair" which we all knew was a complete lie.  She told him that by the time we got upstairs, he should probably have a different answer.  He was so upset that he was in trouble, he was lying to try and get out of it, which got him in more trouble.  TC was in trouble, but not as much as BD because BD is the instigator and definitely started this whole fiasco.  TC was just along for the fun.

When we got upstairs, BD had to sit at a table away from everyone else and was basically not allowed any fun. No social interaction. No math games.  No nothing. Just work. He's used to getting in trouble, but he was upset this time.  He knew this was not good.  After math, they all go to art.   They lined up and left the room with BD in the back of the line.  I'm always at the end to make sure people stay with us.  I bent down to tie a student's shoes and I look up to see Erica talking to BD (who she had been working with while I was at NELA).  BD knew very well that, one, he was supposed to stay in line, and two he was definitely not supposed to be talking to anyone or having any sort of fun, so when I look up to see him smiling with Erica, I  lost it.  I looked up at BD and was like "BD. ART. NOW." Both he and Erica looked at me, shocked.  He ran up to catch up with the class and I went over to explain to Erica the situation. She apologized and laughed.

I don't think either BD or TC were very excited to go home with the behavior reports in their bags, but then again, they shouldn't have put their heads under the faucet. It definitely warranted a behavior report, but I was secretly laughing.  Cute kids.

Anyways, I thought you all would appreciate those stories, so here they are, a few days late. These stories are what keep me coming back and excited for another week.  Happy Sunday everyone!
