MLK Day

Happy MLK Day! While I wish I could say I spent the day commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. or taking part in some sort of great service event, I spent the day in my pajamas sleeping and doing homework. As a meager attempt at paying tribute to the man who did so much for our country, I have a little something to say.

Every day, I leave my apartment and am surrounded by hate. I see racism, sexism and homophobia every day. I see people who are belittled by their peers or their superiors because of a disability or imperfection. I see the amount of growth still needed in our society. We are definitely not perfect and it can be seen every day.

If I look closely though, I also see love, tolerance and acceptance. I see people of all different ethnicities and races working together towards a common goal. I see women serving in positions equal to those of their male counterparts and I see homosexuals marrying. If there is one person we owe this progress to, it's Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thank you MLK, Jr. for fighting for equality. Your strength and perseverance towards equality is something that remains unforgotten and your impact is strong even today.

"i have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear." - MLK
