1. Membership APO is a life changing organization. There is no way I could repay APO for all that it has done and given to me. Serving on exec helps me feel like I am giving back to the organization to which I owe the majority of my college experience.
2.My littles. They came to me in February and have been so much fun. They are extremely different, and yet, they work so well together. I can't imagine having other littles. They are just perfect.
3. Spring Break. Come March, I am always craving to get out of Harrisonburg. I had no doubt that I would go on the APO service spring break trip again, but when Habitat became to project, I got even more excited. It was a great trip with wonderful results.
4. Uncle Hamp and Chris' wedding party. My uncles are gay. They are the reason I support gay rights as much as I support people who want to achieve their dreams. The party was amazing and the support they received was heart warming. My family's support for my uncle and his partner made me proud that, despite a strong faith and a society that says other wise, they are able to support these two in what may be one of the strongest marriages.
5. Summer. It wasn't an exciting summer. I had an internship that didn't work out and most of my friends weren't home, unless they were visiting, but I think I learned a huge lesson. I realized that while Virginia Beach will always be my base, it is no longer my home. It is where I grew up and am surrounded by my family, but my home is Harrisonburg. This scares me to think that when I leave Harrisonburg this summer, I will be leaving my home with no way to go back.
6. Ben. When I think of 2010, this surgery is what I think of. At least for the summer. August 19th was the defining day. I've never been so scared or felt so helpless in my entire life. I will probably never forget sitting in the waiting room and I will definitely never forget the nod he gave us when he was barely awake but heard our voices following the surgery. Ben is number one on my hero list.
7. Karen. It's funny how one person can completely change the dynamic. Having Karen in the apartment has created such an upbeat and positive environment in the apartment. It's one I actually enjoy being in.
8. Colleen. Being surprised on homecoming weekend was just simply wonderful. Spending a weekend with her after not being able to see her for three months was perfect and reconfirmed my belief that she is my best friend and the one who completely understands everything about me.
9. JMU football. We may not win them all, but at least we win the big games. I didn't even want to go to Tech that weekend, but going was the best decision I have made. I couldn't have asked for a bier win, but then adding William and Mary to the mix was just the cherry on top.
10. Finding out about City Year Boston. While I am dreading leaving JMU and would stay there another year, finding out I have plans for next year is all I could ask for. I am so excited about City Year and the opportunity to continue serving. I am scared that once I graduate, I will stop serving even when the desire is still there. The thought of moving to Boston scares me, but makes me so excited. Finding out this news was a great way to end 2010 and transition into the new year.
So while 2011 brings something as monumental, yet dreadful as graduation, I can't help but be excited for what follows. 2010 was a great year and if anything, it's set high expectations for 2011. Here's to seeing where the path leads. Happy new year!
