The rest of this week was much better than Tuesday. Things with JR went back to normal and by today, she even let me read her English essay. As I had guessed, there was nothing really that personal in there. She did have a lot of spelling mistakes, but nothing too horrible. Definitely something that is fixable.
I guess the big news in first grade is that we're doing the Flat Stanley project! I'm really excited about it, but it's going to take a lot of organization. For those of you who don't know about Flat Stanley, here's how it works. Each student is going to decorate a cartoon of Flat Stanley (or Flat Stella). Then, we'll send each Flat cartoon to someone in a different state. Once that person receives their new pen pal, they'll send him back to us with pictures or post cards of where the cartoon character has been. My goal is to send them to as many different states as possible, so if you live in an obscure state (ie not Virginia, Maryland, or Massachusetts) and would like to host a Flat cartoon, please please please let me know! I'll need your address, but you'll probably receive a Flat character within the next month to take around your town. It should be a lot of fun!!
My other joy of the day happened after service (kind of) today. After final circle, I was waiting in the lobby for Sam to finish up and Megan was with me. JA was still hanging around and she came over to hang out with us. A sixth grader J-S M (who Erica is obsessed with) was with us. We got to just hang out and talk to them and ended up staying for like a half hour. It was awesome because JA is so smart and funny. She cracks me up. She even admitted to searching for me on Facebook (she can't see anything), which made me think she actually has some sort of fondness for me. She was reading this article in the Monthly Service Briefing (MSB) that Arthur had written and kept calling us CROP members instead of Corps members. Then she would correct herself and say Corps like the dead body. It was really cute, especially since she's so sassy and always acts like she knows everything.
My day ended a little hectic. As I was switching Ts, I saw my green line at the other end of the station. I started to run to catch it and my back pack fell open with everything falling all over the floor. It was embarrassing for sure. It was like the scene out of a movie. By the time the end of the day rolls around, I'm in just such a daze that I almost feel like you could tell me pigs are flying and it wouldn't even be a big deal, so when my backpack fell open and my stuff fell all over the place in front of 50 people and I ended up missing my train, I wasn't even fazed. It was just another day in the life of a Corps Member.
Anyways, this weekend is busy with a bunch of MLK stuff, so I'm sure it's bound to bring more joys and embarrassing moments. Check back for updates and let me know if you want to host a Flat Stanley pen pal!
