Thursday was hectic because I was going around to classes with Megan presenting this poetry contest we're having for National Poetry Month. I was in and out of the classroom that day, but I made it back in time for one round of literacy block. During literacy block, they get to pick different stations they want to go to. One station is a book on tape, another is playing word games, and another is writing. BD chose writing, along with KC, so I chose to stand kind of close to them and monitor them since they often have a hard time focusing and sitting still. They both chose to write letters to other people and as I was standing there, I read their letters (unbeknownst to them) just to see who they were writing to. Thank goodness I did! BD was writing to EM-G. The letter says "You are the best girlfriend ever so do you want to make out and that all I have to say. Love, Mystery Person" I was so shocked I didn't even know what to say. I let him finish it and put it in the mailbox before quickly grabbing it out. I showed Ms. Moulton who was equally as shocked.
Ms. Moulton called BD over and asked him to read his letter out loud. He conveniently got stuck on the word "make out" but she made him sound it out. When she asked him what it meant, he said he just wanted her to come over to his house and play. When BD's mom came to pick him up that afternoon, she was given the letter and I'm sure she and BD will be having a nice little chat about what is appropriate for a first grader to say/do.
Oh the joys of first grade....
